PPP Proposal for a center of excellence in Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts Training & Education

Kanaan Hospitality Holdings Africa (“KHHA”) proposes to create an accredited educational and vocational training institution that will serve as a Center of Excellence in Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (the “Hospitality School”) for Botswana and ultimately for the sub-Sahara Region of Africa offering both practical and classroom course work that qualifies for articulation to a prestigious Johnson and Wales University degree.

As an integral part of its overall plan, KHHA also proposed to build two five star luxury hotels: (i) a 150 room luxury hotel (the “Luxury Hotel”) operated by a major top tier flag targeting tourists, businessmen, government and the convention trade and (ii) an ultra-luxury small boutique hotel (50-60 rooms) (the “Boutique Hotel”) targeted towards members of the diamond trade and the high end tourist.  The Luxury Hotel is particularly important to KHHA’s overall execution of its education strategy as it will serve as a practical training and finishing school for students of the Hospitality School.  Each hotel will house several restaurants.  KHHA will require approximately 20 acres of land.

Overall, KHHA proposal addresses:
  • Immediate and intermediate training needs for predominantly existing employees in the Botswana hospitality and tourism industry and service businesses with linkages to these industries (the “Industry”) by managing an existing training center owned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (the “Training Center”)
  • Training needs for Batswana that cannot travel by creating a mobile training unit
  • Longer term training needs by the construction of the Hospitality School with an articulation agreement with Johnson & Wales University and a curriculum designed to be recognized and accepted by world class hospitality institutions
  • Longer term needs by construction of a five-star hotel attracting top tier flag operators as a result of the standard of training offered by the Hospitality School
  • Culinary gaps through the establishment of high end restaurants within the luxury Hotel and Hospitality School
  • Culinary culture by showcasing local and regional cuisines and ingredients
  • Capturing a greater share of the tourism and travel wallet of diamond traders with the Boutique Hotel that will have butler service and a high end kosher restaurant
SUMMARY OF APPROACH

In order to address both the immediate, intermediate and long term training and educational needs of the local Hospitality and Tourism industry (the “Industry”), KHHA proposes a two step approach:

2.1) Enter into a management contract to manage the existing Training Center currently owned by The Ministry of Home Affairs

Core curriculum will be designed by a team led by Karl Guggenmos, Dean of Culinary Education of Johnson and Wales University (“JWU”) and Global Master Chef.  The curriculum will be designed to:

  • address immediate skills gaps in the Industry for both new entrants and existing employees in the Industry producing “ready-to-work” graduates;
  • be delivered in modules that combine at least a minimum of 50% hands-on practical training in addition to classroom instruction;
  • be of a world class quality delivered by an experienced faculty adhering to the highest academic and professional standards recognized and valued by global hospitality and tourism institutions (e.g. Ritz Carlton, CIA, JWU);
  • provide two levels of qualification, certificate and diploma levels, which will be of a quality that can serve as a “degree pathway” to articulation to a JWU Associates, Bachelor or Masters degree.

Student capacity is initially estimated at 160 students per day. School year will be structured around four semesters.

In order to deliver the proper standard of training, KHHA will require the Government of Botswana to fund certain improvements to the existing training center, facilitate instructor visas/work permits and grant certain tax waivers/relief. Terms of the management agreement are more fully detailed in Section 6.
